Avant window navigator provides a nice Task bar (even a 3D task bar)
 
Run the following apt-get commands
 
sudo apt-get update  (this will update ubuntu to the latest packages)
and the following will install avant window navigator
sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator-trunk awn-manager-trunk awn-extras-applets-trunk
 
Note: make sure the following lines are in /etc/apt/sources.list (If it is not there please add these lines)
 
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
 
 
Now goto Applications->Accessories, you will have Avant Window Navigator menuitem, click on it and launch it. You can configure it to launch while booting automatically.
