Not sure how or why this happened, but this can be easily fixed.
 
From a terminal open interfaces file
 
sudo gedit /etc/network/interfaces
 
add the following two lines if missing
 
 
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
 
 
restart networking
 
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

  • right clicked on the network icon worked for me.
    ubuntu 10.04 is giving me only headaches so far. interface, audio and network problems. lol.
