Running `metacity --replace` did not work for me, but using the "Use custom settings" and then in the Settings... under Performance, I checked "Disable the render extension", and the Metacity window decorations render properly.
This is using the NX Client 3.4.0-7 on Windows XP Professional connecting to Ubuntu 10.10 and 9.10.

Same situation for me (no improvement with 'metacity --replace') and your solution worked for me too. (Note to the next person with this problem: The option change being recommended is in the NX client, not in Ubuntu itself. Probably obvious, but I figured I'd note it anyway.)

Connecting to Ubuntu 10.04 is ok. 10.10 has "invisible" title bar and borders. The invisible buttons and borders will behave normally if I happen to click/drag on the right places.
About the only thing I can do is when I chose [Use plain X bitmaps] (under "Use Customs - Settings"); I can get the text on the title bar to show up (still no decorations).
I am using NX Client 3.4.0-7 on Vista Ultimate 64-bit.
