Have tried numerous times to install Natty on my AMD 64 Phenom computer.  Goes up to the point of "Loading Additional Compnents", then stalls.  Just a purple screen.  At one attempt to install I just let it set for about an hour and a network config screen came up, had to set-up DHCP, then it stalled again.

Scratching my head in Denver.  My thanks in advance.

From your question it looks like there is an issue with the network card or networking on that machine

My advise would be use a Ubuntu Live CD and boot using it and try out ubuntu without installing. Make sure everything works fine without installing

Just another question, are you installing for the first time? If so What other OS you have on that machine and does networking works in that OS? Too me looks like ubuntu is trying to connect to the network but not able to...
