How to find current version of ubuntu?

uname -a

only returns linux kernel version

but i need ubuntu version?

launch a terminal and run

$ lsb_release -a

you'll get detailed output about ubuntu version, name, code name, etc...

Also you can use System Monitor. Programs>System Monitor>Click on the System tab.
