Amaya is a free and great HTML editor for linux, windows and mac platforms.
You can download Free HTML Editor for your favorite platform. 
This great tool has support for editing HTML documents, XML, CSS Style sheets, MathML and SVG

I think the "best editor" is the one who siuts your needs. If you would like a simple editor with autocomplete, wich runs smooth without consummning too much memory, you should take a look at Komodo.
Here is a how to install tutorial. You don't have to use Komodo, but you should try it.
