I hate (and who else doesn't) when windows asks to reboot the machine whenever a critical or important update has been installed from windows updates.
Now ubuntu linux does the same thing (requires reboot after installing critical updates). Is there a way to get around this?

Yes it is definitely possible. You need ksplice uptrack service.
ksplice is available here http://www.ksplice.com/uptrack/
