I have a couple of machines and run windows and ubuntu respectively but have only one mouse keyboard. It is a kind of pain switching back and forth the mouse and keyboard between machines. Is there a software solution for sharing?

I think what you need is a KVM Swutch. KVM stands for Keyboard, Video, Mouse. It is a switch in witch you connect your mouse, your keyboard and your monitor. You can switch between 2 computers by using (in my KVM's case) :  Shift + F2F2.
    Hope that helps you!
