Try this:

sudo passwd

You will be asked to enter o password twice. After that, your root should have a password.

The first username you gave while installing ubuntu is the root user with super user privileges.
You can goto System->Administration->Users and Groups and add/edit new or existings users.
Make sure you Unlock using your root password else buttons will be disabled.
