I want to run my own local dns server using ubuntu server. Right now the server gets a new ip address every time the machine restarts. Someone help me how to set a static ip address so that it stays the same ip in the network always.

Please follow these steps to configure static ip address for your linux machine

  • Open a terminal
  • Navigate to the /etc/network directory
  • Open interfaces file using vi or gedit or any editor of your choice
  • Find entry for address, if doesn't exist add one like below with ip address you want assign to this ubuntu machine
    • address 192.168.1.15
  • Save the file
  • Now your ubuntu machine should have the static ip configured
