Ubuntu 9.04 had a way to change login window under System->Administration->Login Window. Now the feature is missing. All i can find is a Login Screen menuitem but it doesn't have any option to change the appearance of login window. I tried searching synaptics manager and still no luck.

    1. Logout of your current session and return to the GDM
    2. Switch to the tty command line prompt using Ctrl-Alt-F1
    3. Login using your normal login/password
    4. at the command line prompt type: export DISPLAY=:0.0
    5. then type: sudo -u gdm gnome-control-center
    6. Switch back to the gdm screen using ALT-F7
    7. The gnome-control-center should be loaded. Use it to configure your GDM.
    8. Click on the Appearances icon, in appearances you can change your GDM's font, theme and background image.
    9. Close the gnome-control-center and login normally.

  • Greetings,   This is the first time that I've heard of this option to change the GDM login window.  I found it interesting except that when I got to step 5 my computer couldn't find the info to export.  What do I do now?  Also, I cannot find on my menu the 'Login Window' either.  How can I get that placed on my menu?  I am also having trouble with the resolution of the splash & Login window with the picture flicking around sideways and up & down.  Can't seem to fix that.  Could you help me with these problems please?

    Thanks

  • DO NOT TRY THIS ON 9.10 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you try this you will not be able to see your desktop ...

    on TTy1, type

    sudo apt-get gdm

it will ask you which GDM is default, DO NOT pick gdm2

    done

    Just make your image
    size - 2560x1600
    name - bg_2560x1600.jpg
rename the current image in /usr/share/images/xsplash from bg_2560x1600.jpg to bg_2560x1600.old.jpg
Then copy your new pic over to the /usr/share/images/xsplash directory
I did this all logged in as root and it did the trick

  • Try copying the new pic after removing the old ones...be sure to have a copy of that, in case anything goes wrong. To copy the pic: sudo cp -R source /usr/share/images/xsplash source is the location of ur new picture eg:/home/bg_2560x1660.jpg
to remove the old ones:  sudo rm -R /usr/share/images/xsplash/2560x1660.jpg
    1st remove the old ones.

  • Try with the sudo command, it should work because /usr is not a user directory

  • My system wont let me save anything in that folder.
