I've plugged in a Logitech Clicksmart 310 webcam into my Dell's front USB port. It appears in the 'lsusb' list and it appears in 'lsmod':

How do I create the /dev/video* entry by hand? The gspca_spca500 is the right driver for the clicksmart 310. I think that's the only thing missing to be able to use video in skype.

You should be able to create a video device video0 by running the following command
 
mknod /dev/video0 c 81 0

Also take a look at the MAKEDEV command
 
you will get more info running the following command in a terminal
 
man MAKEDEV

Hey there. Took a look into your problem. I have had my own issues
with "newer" logitech webcam products so i was keen to see what issues
you are having too. I came across this thread here I think you should
have a look at.

Looks like this cam has had support issues since Dapper Drake.
