No problem, ubuntu has all the answers for you. When installing Ubuntu you have many options.

You can keep your Windows XP as it is without removing it. While installing from Ubuntu CD, you can choose to install in the free disk space and it will install it correctly for you. Now when you reboot your machine after install, you will see a new Grub boot menu, where you can choose to enter "Windows XP" or Ubuntu.

Here is more details How to install ubuntu on windows machine

Hope this helps.

  • Great work by the Orig. Answerer.  He/She are completely correct. Ubuntu doesn't mind sharing a harddisk with Windows.  Windows doesn't like sharing a harddisk with anyone.
As a General rule of thumb, it's always best to install windows on a harddrive first.  then install ubuntu second.
