I have installed freenx server on my ubuntu 64bit amd box and connect through nomachine nx client from my ubuntu laptop. There is no problem in connecting. It connects perfectly fine and nomachine nx client is really cool, fast and easy to use.

However there is one problem. I don't see any minimize or maximize on my window i opened inside nxclient remote desktop. Since the window by default opened is really small i want to maximize the same. Unfortunately there is no minimize or maximize button. The window is without any borders (borderless windows). Big inconvenience, any help would be really appreciated.

  • Upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10 broke freenx installation. I had to forcefully remove it using

    # dpkg --purge freenx-server

and then manually deleting files the above command could not delete. Thankfully it mentioned those files in the error message. I used the command

    #rm -r

Then, I installed nomachine's free NX server which allows max 2 sessions. However, I could not even see ubuntu menu in nxsession and no borders and max/min buttons on the windows. Upgraded NX client on Windows 7 machine to latest version but it did not help. The command $ metacity --replace helped show the window borders but nothing else worked. Finally, the link below helped:

This is due to window manager issue.

Launch a terminal and run the following your window should have borders now with minimize and maximize buttons

    metacity --replace

  • type in the terminal

    ~$ gconf-editor

and then in the configuration editor go to: desktop>gnome>session>required_components>windowma nager

in windowmanager you'll find the parameter 'compiz' change it for 'metacity' (without the single quotes), and log-out or reboot, and everything just gonna work fine again. btw happy holidays.

  • I had the same syndrome with remote session from my Ubuntu 11.04: no title bar and no window frame on my remote NX session on Windows Xp and Windows 7 x64. Yet it was correct on local session and also correct on remote NX session from another Ubuntu 11.04.
I tried everything mentioned here to no avail. I also moved back to Gnome 2 from Gnome 3. No difference.
I finally found the solution: upgrade from NX client 3.5.0.6 to 3.5.0.7. It did the trick. It cured the problem on both XP et Win7 clients. Hallelujah!

Running `metacity --replace` did not work for me, but using the "Use custom settings" and then in the Settings... under Performance, I checked "Disable the render extension", and the Metacity window decorations render properly.

This is using the NX Client 3.4.0-7 on Windows XP Professional connecting to Ubuntu 10.10 and 9.10.

  • Same situation for me (no improvement with 'metacity --replace') and your solution worked for me too. (Note to the next person with this problem: The option change being recommended is in the NX client, not in Ubuntu itself. Probably obvious, but I figured I'd note it anyway.)

  • "metacity --replace" did not work for me.
"Disable the render extension" did not work for me.

Connecting to Ubuntu 10.04 is ok. 10.10 has "invisible" title bar and borders. The invisible buttons and borders will behave normally if I happen to click/drag on the right places.

About the only thing I can do is when I chose [Use plain X bitmaps] (under "Use Customs - Settings"); I can get the text on the title bar to show up (still no decorations).

I am using NX Client 3.4.0-7 on Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

  • Upgrading NX client to 3.5.0-7 worked perfectly. metacity --replace showed the window decorations fuzzily, but at least I could close windows.

  • Well, I was having same proplem myself, no close/minimize/maximize buttons. couldnt find right answer from the web, It took me awhile, but finally I noticed that my son had played with compiz settings... once again. And there wasn't "window frames" activated anymore, he must have accidently clicket it off, because wobbling windows where turned on, and it is right next to window frames.
Hope this helps someone, it did the trick for me anyway :)

For me... i like to mess around with compiz and emrald and things like that so what i had done was i had enabled emerald and it was not displaying my title bar.. so if you have the compiz fusion icon you need to right click it, where it says select window decorator you need to make sure that GTK window decorator is selected.
