If you are still following this, you probably won't want this anyway. I'm only saying that because you said you're new to linux.
Scalpel is a command-line tool that requires an image file to work with. So first you will need to 'image' (verb) a number of files. I'm rather new to linux myself, and am unaware of any Ubuntu applications that will image files. However, you could use PING [Partimage Is Not Ghost] or CAINE and I believe Clonezilla and RIPLinux can create images of files or filesystems.

To run Scalpel, you must go to Accessories-->Terminal then type "sudo apt-get install scalpel" (without quotes) press Enter; type your password and press enter again. This will confirm you have it installed or install it if you don't.
Next, type "man scalpel" and press enter. You will get a Manual page that is 152 lines long. I don't know what to do to use this tool so hopefully this is enough for you to figure out what to do.

Good luck!! Sorry I really am not that knowledgeable myself..
