Is it possible to partition a new hard disk to allow for an installation of Windows XP after installing Ubuntu 10.04?

I wish to keep the option of running Win XP available, should I need to run Windows software in the future that will not run under Wine.

Yes, it is possible. Use GPartEd (Partition Editor) to resize the hard disk / partition and make room for installing other operating systems.

One thing to be aware is installing windows after Ubuntu, corrupts the boot loader. You have fix the bootloader after installation to get it to work.
