Please help me in picking the right video recording and editing software for ubuntu 10.10 or linux, thanks.

Answer

VLC has a built in feature to record and playback video's and it's works great.

Launch VLC player

Click on Media menu

Click on Open Capture Device

Enter the video device name (for e.g /dev/video0)

Change the menu option next to the cancel button to Convert and select it

You'll be taken to a Convert Dialog, Enter the destination file

and hit Start button

Now from the VLC player interface you can start / stop to record and the video file will be created in H.264 + AAC(mp4) format. You can change this by changing the profile in the Convert dialog
