I feel really dumb here but I cannot see how to network the desktop to the server for the purpose of using server folders for storage.

I've set up samba on the server and the ubuntu desktop can see shares on my windows pcs and the windows ocs can see samba shares on the ubuntu server but the ubuntu desktop can't see anything on the ubuntu server.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Answer

You can use Places -> Connect to Server,

Since it is a samba share

Choose Windows share in the drop down

Enter information like server, shared folder, username and click connect

This should help you to use those shared folders
