Unity is the default GUI interface in ubuntu 11.04

GNome 3.0 is released and it looks great. The good news is gnome is also shipped with ubuntu but not available as default (it is available through classic login option)

So which interface are you planning to use... unity or gnome?

Please post your answers here, thanks.

  • Gnome is my choice. After using the Unity interface for about a week now, I find it difficult and cumbersome to navigate. As a long time Linux user (since Slackware 1994), I know what to expect inside the interface, but dang, I'm spending way too much time trying to just do simple stuff.

I suppose it's just the learning curve, but it's sort of like when Microsoft does a wholesale makeover of a long time product, it just hacks people off.

    Other observations:

    - Applications seem to take a bit longer to spawn
    - When running routine apps like email or browsers, the screen switches off, blinks several times, flashes a command line script, then logs me off and displays the login screen.

    Recommendations:
    - Put the old workspace switcher tray icon back where it was. The new one sucks.
    - Put the "Administration" and whatever the other one was back in the upper menu bar for house keeping tasks...after a week, I still can't find the Unity equivalent, and it's driving me nuts.

Other than that, it's another great Linux release, and I REALLY appreciate having an alternative to MS and APL OS's....you guys are DA BEST !

  • -1 for Unity, because for the moment I don't find how use launcher to create shortcut for my java application or wine application.
I have not tried Gnome 3 for the moment but with th current version of gnome run perfectly.

    Answer

I tried Gnome 3, but I found it too restrictive.  Even with some of the things I do not like in Unity, I still like Unity better than Gnome 3.
