Please help with commands of How to shutdown reboot a remote linux machine?

I hate (and who else doesn't) when windows asks to reboot the machine whenever a critical or important update has been installed from windows updates.
Now ubuntu linux does the same thing (requires reboot after installing critical updates). Is there a way to get around this?
