disable local routing

Hello,
I need to test the performance of some networking equipment. Essentially I would like to setup one PC with two ethernet cards. Essentially I am sending traffice from one NIC (IP) to the second NIC (IP).  The issue which I am having is that the Kernel is too smart and routes the traffic internally without even touching the network interfaces. How can I disable the local routing and force the computer to send the traffic over the network interfaces.

Where did the directories of home go?

I installed Ubuntu on a core i5 laptop about a month ago. After a few days the network icon was missing in the panel, and I could not retrieve it. Because I had no way to get on-line through Ubuntu I decided to re-install the version above mentioned, then 3 or 4 days after the new installation everything was running well until I received a notification for updating the system. I did what almost everybody does, (password and so on...).
