Where to find the symbol for Shutdown & position it on the bar top right?

Installed Ubu 11 on my sister's Dell Inspiron 1721 (after destriping the hdds into two seperate hdds of 160 gb each, don't think this is the issue, i previously installed windows xp on on of them and it was fine, if a little sluggish.)

After install, smoke test and it fires up right to the point of drawing the background and telling me wifi networks are available - close but no cigar -

The desktop icons/startbar/anythingatall don't appear. Just the mouse cursor.

I ran a system update and now my desktop is blank, all the folders that appear on the side are gone, how can I get them back?

Although i like the new unity interface, it is hard for me to use it since everything is new and a huge learning curve.

How to permanently switch ubuntu 11.04 from unity to gnome so that i can continue my work?

 Heeeeeelp plse. I am using ubuntu 10.10 64bit desktop version, it reconizes my broad band modem but keeps saying "you are now disconnected"  when i use wvdial it intalizes the modem but I can't connect when I open Firefox web browser. Are there no open source K3570-z usb modem drivers Please.
